{info} weird soul stuff
So as most people who are even tangentially into anime know, Evangelion is about robots fighting Angels! Only slightly less commonly known: Kaworu is an Angel! This doesn't mean what you think it means at all. Evangelion, while using a lot of terminology from Judeo-Christian mythology, is actually a whole lot more like the works of H.P. Lovecraft, or, less favorably, Ancient Aliens.
Let me lay it out for you as simply and informatively as I can for those of you who want to know Fun Details.
BACKSTORY!
Eons and eons ago (well over 4.6 billion years, apparently), the first intelligent race in the Milky Way Galaxy were facing imminent destruction. Resigning themselves to extinction, but wanting to ensure that similar beings would live on elsewhere in the universe, they created seven Seeds of Life, each containing the soul of a member of the First Ancestral Race, and placed them on massive transport vehicles to send to other worlds.
The first to land on Earth would later be codenamed Adam. The second, which accidentally crashlanded on Earth, would be Lilith. Only one Seed could be active on a planet at once, and so Adam's failsafe subdued it, allowing Lilith's progeny to grow and evolve into humans.
Fast forward several billion years to 2000, when an expedition in Antarctica awoke the dormant Adam, culminating in a giant explosion that nearly wiped out all Lilith-based life on Earth, and allowed the Seed to finally do what it was meant to do: fill the planet with its progeny, codenamed Angels.
And now you know what 26 episodes of Evangelion didn't really tell you at all.
SO WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN?
Basically, Kaworu is a human vessel for the soul of Adam. To put it as simply as possible, there is a 4.6+ billion year old ancient alien progenitor soul just kind of hanging out in this kid. Something super old and super huge that tried its very hardest to give birth to a race of superintelligent monsters and populate a world with its babies.
Because of their origin, Angels are described as another form humanity could have taken, and in fact share a 99.89% genetic similarity with humans. But then, some of them look like giant spiders or tentacles made of light or googly-eyed dick monsters, so in this case, it's probably safe to consider them a cousin several billion times removed.
SO WHAT DOES HIS SOUL ACTUALLY BELONG TO?
For people who might be able to sense these things (or hey, just for the curious), we don't actually get any good views of it in the series, but Adam was:
SO WHAT CAN I SENSE?
I really don't care either way, but here's a decent rule of thumb. To normal humans, there's definitely something off about him, but it ranges from "wow that kid is creepin' me out" to "something inhuman." Physically — DNA-wise — he's human, even though he's a spooky albino who acts kinda off.
To people who can sense any kind of soul-related shenanigans... feel free to notice that he's actually an unfathomably huge multi-billion year old monstermom from the depths of space. But it's cool, he's friendly.

For people who might be able to sense these things (or hey, just for the curious), we don't actually get any good views of it in the series, but Adam was:
- humanoid
- ridiculously huge
- like seriously, just crazy big — the vessel it arrived in was 13.75km/8.5 miles in diameter
- whoa, those tiny dots are people
- these appeared when it exploded and touched the stratosphere
- the best view anyone got before they died
